The year is 1668, Cromwell has been deposed and England is a sovereign state once more following the return of Charles II to the throne  ….. The Merry Monarch!

Charles reintroduced theatre to the country and ordered that women should appear on the stage – a very contentious issue at the time!

Visiting the theatre of the King’s Players, Charles meets a brash young woman called Eleanor Gwynne whose raw talent had been spotted and nurtured by Charles Hart, the leading actor.

Eleanor was a one-time orange seller who became a celebrated comedic actress and, via a love relationship with Hart, a mistress of Charles II.

A bawdy romp through Nell’s life and loves, her tricky relationship with her gin-soaked mother and with the “linen-breasted” actor, Edward Kynaston.  Her response to the other mistresses of the King; her love for her sister Rose and her close and affectionate relationship with the people of London.

Singing and dancing, love and loss, glamour and grime!

The redolent atmosphere of Little Moreton Hall with it’s black timbers and cobbled courtyard provide the perfect location for our company to entertain you – there is even a lawn in front of the Hall for a pre-theatre picnic should you wish!

Press Quotes

‘Superbly funny…a juicy, well-wrought thing of great fun, a wonderfully layered celebration of theatre, but most of all an apt homage to a woman incredibly ahead of her time’ … Time Out Magazine

‘Bawdy and brilliant… a wonderful, warm-hearted and generous piece of theatrical history’ … The Stage

‘An out-and-out celebration of the fun of theatre… if you’re looking for laughs, and a romping brash show, this is great’ … The Arts Desk
