ALSAGER COMMUNITY THEATRE

Alsager Community Theatre (ACT) was founded in 1973.  Our current aim is to produce at least two plays a year, one in our home base in the Alsager Civic and one, courtesy of the National Trust, at Little Moreton Hall.

During the past 44 years, we have gained a reputation for acclaimed productions of Shakespeare and other classics, as well as having a sell-out season at the Edinburgh Fringe in 2004 with Dylan Thomas’s Under Milk Wood

Welcome to our website!

Are you an experienced amateur actor on the look out for a new challenge? Or have you never acted before but find the idea appealing? Alsager Community Theatre is looking for new talent to take part in its annual outdoor summer production, which takes place in the beautiful courtyard of Little Moreton Hall (or in a marquee there if the weather is unhelpful!).
This year's production will be The Two Noble Kinsmen written jointly by William Shakespeare and John Fletcher, and open auditions are taking place in February. ACT's six performances are between 12th and 21st July 2018.

This story of two young Thebans in love with the same woman is a tale of war and courtly love previously told by Chaucer in The Canterbury Tales, and will be a treat for both actors and audience: a chance to experience one of Shakespeare’s lesser known and rarely performed works, and one which contains a host of strong and memorable characters.

There is conflict between the Greek cities of Athens and Thebes, and cousins Palamon and Arcite find themselves prisoners of war in Athens. While in prison they both fall madly in love with Emilia, sister-in-law to the Duke of Athens, and change from the best of friends into perfect enemies! Shakespeare and Fletcher introduce a new character to the story whose presence prompts some lovely poignant scenes; the jailer’s daughter, driven to madness by her love for Palamon. There are also opportunities for humour; the speed with which Palamon and Arcite fall for Emilia, their polite consideration for each other as they prepare to fight to the death, and Emilia gazing at pictures of Palamon and Arcite, trying to decide which one she likes best.

There is a read-through of The Two Noble Kinsmen on Monday 12 February and auditions are on Monday 19 and Wednesday 21 February at 7.45pm in Alsager Library. Everyone is welcome to attend. Rehearsals begin in April and will generally be on Mondays and Wednesdays in Alsager Library. For more information, or if you are interested but cannot make those audition dates, please phone Diana Lane on 01260 281544.
