National Trust property Little Moreton Hall once again hosts a production by award-winning local amateur company, Alsager Community Theatre. In July, ACT stages an adaptation of Shakespeare’s much-loved comedy, As You Like It, in the courtyard of this beautiful Elizabethan Hall (or in a marquee there if the weather is wet).
The courtyard will be transformed into the forest of Arden, where Rosalind and Orlando meet after being driven from the court by the cruelty and injustice of their families. The forest is already the home of exiles; a band of merry men led by Duchess Senior, usurped from her rightful position by her wicked sister, Federica. Meanwhile love is in the air, infecting not only the humblest of shepherds and country wenches but also the sons and daughters of the nobility. However, Rosalind is in disguise and Orlando must be put to the test before he can be found worthy of her love.
Director Philip Jackson tells us “As You Like It is one of Shakespeare's sunniest and most joyful plays, as the exiles find a freedom in the forest denied to them in the stifling atmosphere of the court. Rosalind is considered by many play-goers to be Shakespeare's most delightful heroine, but the play also features a host of appealing and amusing characters, as well as one of Shakespeare's most famous speeches: "All the world's a stage..."
ACT is fortunate to have gathered a large and very experienced cast of familiar faces and new talent, and once again wardrobe mistress Barbara Malcolm will be producing stunning and colourful costumes to complement the beautiful setting of the Hall.”
As You Like It is performed on 13, 14 and 15 July and on 20, 21 and 22 July 2017 at 7.30pm. Audience members are free to picnic on the lawns at Little Moreton Hall beforehand, and there is a marquee for performances in the event of wet weather.
Tickets are GBP14 (GBP10 for under 21s), and they can be obtained from 1st June by phoning the box office on 01260 276165. This number will not answer until that date.
